Legacy Modernization: Customizing a Cloud-Based Management System

Moore RMG’s incomplete shift from AS400 to VB.NET left them managing two disconnected systems—driving up costs and reducing efficiency. Tricension stepped in with a custom management system that unified workflows, improved reporting, and reduced infrastructure costs.

Moore RMG’s Legacy System Limitations

Moore RMG initially operated on a legacy AS400 mainframe and attempted to bridge gaps with a VB.NET system. However, this hybrid approach introduced a host of challenges:

  • Data Compatibility and Integration Issues
Integrating data between AS400 and VB.NET presented compatibility challenges. The AS400 system, while robust, was difficult to integrate with modern software due to its outdated architecture and dependencies.
  • High Maintenance Costs
Maintaining two separate systems came with high infrastructure and operational costs. The AS400 system’s aging hardware and the additional resources required for VB.NET maintenance were becoming financially unsustainable.
  • Limited Functionality and User Experience
The disjointed systems led to functionality gaps that made it hard for staff to efficiently manage workflows and deliver consistent service. Each system lacked features that the other provided, creating a cumbersome and fragmented user experience.

Designing a Custom Cloud-Based Management System

Moore RMG needed a unified, scalable solution that would integrate their workflows, improve data accessibility, and support future growth while reducing operational costs. Tricension developed a custom cloud-based management platform specifically designed to address Moore RMG’s requirements.

Key Components of the Solution:

  • Centralized Data Management
By migrating AS400 and VB.NET data into a cloud-based platform, Tricension provided Moore RMG a centralized system. ETL processes with end-to-end encryption were employed to maintain data integrity during the migration.
  • Advanced Reporting and Analytics
The platform’s modular reporting framework allowed the team to generate real-time, client-specific reports, providing actionable insights that were challenging to deliver with the old system.
  • User-Friendly Interface and Improved UX
A key focus was creating a simplified, intuitive interface that reduced the learning curve and made workflows more efficient. The new system featured an improved UX that consolidated tasks, minimized steps, and enhanced usability for both new and experienced users.
  • Scalable Architecture
To future-proof the system, our experts adopted a microservices architecture that allowed Moore RMG to scale individual components based on demand. This approach provided flexibility, helping avoid performance bottlenecks during high-traffic periods.

Addressing Technical Challenges

Transitioning from a legacy system to a cloud-based platform is no easy feat. But with years of expertise in cloud based systems and legacy modernization, Tricension was able to proactively mitigate risks and quickly move past obstacles.

Here are some of the challenges faced and how we tackled them:

  • Data Migration and Security
Transitioning sensitive data from AS400 and VB.NET systems to a cloud environment required meticulous planning. Tricension utilized secure data integration platforms and ETL tools to safely migrate data while preserving its integrity. Encryption protocols were implemented to protect sensitive information throughout the migration.
  • Compatibility and Integration
Ensuring that the legacy data formats from AS400 and VB.NET could integrate smoothly into the new system was a complex process. We employed advanced data mapping and transformation techniques to ensure compatibility, making the data accessible and usable in the new environment.

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

Minimizing disruption was a priority during the deployment phase. To ensure a smooth transition to the new system, Tricension took the following approach:

  • Pilot Testing and Iterative Feedback
A pilot rollout enabled Moore RMG to test the new system with a select group of users. Feedback from this phase allowed us to make necessary adjustments before full deployment.
  • Comprehensive Training and Support
Tricension provided hands-on training and detailed documentation to help Moore RMG’s team adjust to the new system. This support included guided sessions and a helpdesk to address any questions during the initial phases of use.
  • Post-Deployment Optimization
After deployment, Tricension continued to monitor system performance and made optimizations based on real-time data and user feedback.

Key Outcomes: Impact on Business

The transition from an outdated legacy system to a modern cloud-based infrastructure proved to be beneficial for Moore RMG. Some of the key improvements observed since the deployment of the new system are as follows:

  • 30% Increase in Operational Efficiency
Centralized workflows reduced time spent on repetitive tasks, allowing staff to focus on high-value activities.
  • 20% Increase in Client Reporting
The platform’s advanced reporting capabilities allowed Moore RMG to generate accurate, real-time reports tailored to individual client needs.
  • Cost Savings
By consolidating systems and moving to a cloud-based infrastructure, Moore RMG significantly reduced maintenance and infrastructure costs.
  • Streamlined User Experience
The simplified, intuitive interface improved the user experience, reducing the learning curve and boosting productivity.
